Is Propane Okay for the Environment?

Count on propane equipment for low emissions and exceptional efficiency.

propane Jerome, AZ In Jerome and throughout Northern Arizona, countless homeowners rely on propane for their home heating, water heaters and gas appliances. Propane is notable for its versatility and dependability. Despite its benefits, there’s a common misconception that propane isn’t as eco-friendly as electricity or some other home energy sources. However, this couldn’t be further from the truth. Propane is an exceptionally eco-friendly option.

At Superior Propane, we recognize the importance of providing sustainable energy solutions that keep your homes warm and secure while minimizing your home emissions. Our fuel fits the bill. Conventional propane was designated as an alternative fuel in the 1990 Clean Air Act and the Energy Policy Act of 1992. Today, we’re witnessing remarkable progress in the production and development of renewable propane, which elevates low-emission energy to unprecedented levels!

Propane and the Environment

Conventional propane comes from natural gas extraction and oil refining, so no new wells are needed to make it. But what’s really the environmental impact of propane? Let’s look at its carbon intensity, which tells us how much carbon dioxide is produced to create a specific amount of energy. It turns out that conventional propane has a lower carbon intensity not only than gasoline and diesel but also the electricity from Arizona’s grid, which depends heavily on natural gas and coal for generation.

Here’s another plus: propane has no methane, unlike natural gas. Methane is a super potent greenhouse gas. Plus, conventional propane doesn’t have particulate matter, which is a cancer-causing substance.

Efficient Propane Equipment

Today’s propane equipment is super efficient, meaning you can use less fuel to stay comfy and cut down on home emissions. Propane furnaces can hit energy efficiency ratings of over 98%! Plus, modern propane water heaters can heat water about twice as fast as electric ones. With tankless water heaters, you get almost unlimited hot water whenever you need it while using even less fuel. And when it comes to laundry, propane clothes dryers have much shorter cycles than electric ones.

The Emergence of Renewable Propane

While conventional propane is already green, renewable propane offers an even more eco-friendly future. It is chemically identical to conventional propane, so it works in gas-fired equipment without changes. However, it is made from organic and recycled sources like used cooking oil, animal fats, woody biomass, municipal waste and plant oils. When made from domestic used cooking oil, renewable propane’s CI score is about one-quarter of conventional propane’s and 15% of Arizona’s grid electricity. Other feedstocks and blends aim to reduce that CI more. Although not yet common in homes, its production is growing. Soon, you can expect to see renewable propane become an integral component of America’s carbon reduction solution.
