Where are propane tanks positioned on a food truck?
Food trucks generally use 100-pound propane tanks. These tanks can be handled by two workers and can power your appliances for several hours. You can attach tanks to food trucks in two ways:
- Horizontal tank placement — In some trucks, propane tanks go underneath, contained in a protective compartment. This compartment buffers the tanks if there’s a collision, but your propane storage will still be vulnerable to road debris. Additionally, changing a tank is more difficult than with a vertical tank placement design.
- Vertical tank placement — Your tanks will be upright on the back of the truck with this design. Placed just above the bumper, the tanks are safe from impact if there’s a minor accident. You’ll also have better access to change the tank.
Please be sure to train your employees on how to identify the smell of odorized propane (the smell of rotten eggs, spoiled meat or skunk spray), how to locate your truck’s gas lines and how to contact emergency services to address a propane leak.
